Yes, we all have to go sometime, but let's strive for quality of life in the meantime. If each of us

People may be quick to see the connection between DEHP and plastics as it makes them softer

I suggest LISTENING to the patient, or the patient's mother! IF one studies the modern petrochemically derived concoctions, innocuously termed "fragrance," AND, if one realized that hospitals and homes were flagrantly fragranced, one just might learn that infants can have eczema "right at birth." There's the disinfectants and the soaps and the perfumes used by staff, visitors, parents, shampoos and conditioners, lotions, air "fresheners," deodorizers, scented disposable diapers and wipes, scented baby lotions, and the detergents and the fabric softeners. The list of scented products goes on and on and scented products should not go on newborns! But, fragrances affect more than just the skin of the user. The chemicals volatilize to adversely affect all -- some sooner than later. That's diversity for you! Bear in mind, there is AIRBORNE contact dermatitis. -- barb

- Why is chemical brain injury ignored? Pondering causes and risks.(Editorial)
Archives of Environmental Health, March, 2003, by Kaye H. Kilburn
Dr. Kilburn writes, in part:
"I presume that the numerous factors that currently slow both individuals' and society's
acceptance of chemicals as major causes of diseases are the same as those that created
opposition so many years ago to the demonstration that fecal contamination of water
caused cholera. I think it imperative to identify 13 such factors. ...
"3. 'It's all in your head.' Sometimes physicians dismiss unfamiliar problems of patients
with this rejoinder, implying that the perceived problem stems from a mind disorder
or a psychiatric problem. Seldom is the broader, literal interpretation made--that "in your
head" means a brain problem. While 'mind' may be a nebulous concept, brain
dysfunction is susceptible to orderly, objective investigation. It is strange that few
psychiatrists, when evaluating chemically exposed patients, consider that the depression,
mania, and other disorders they treat with drugs (chemicals) could be caused by
other chemicals. Instead, the tendency is to prescribe more chemicals (drugs), thus
further poisoning the brains of such patients. "

I've linked info which you may find of interest to print out and take to your doctor.
This category includes researchers. Please, if you know of names to add or info to change,

Asking for a diagnosis? Doctors love codes-- give 'em the following sets of codes, along
with the analyses of perfumes that form the basis of EHN's 1999 FDA Citizens'
Petition, 99P-1340. Remember to write to the FDA, just don't give identifying numbers!

Pesticide Illness & Injury Surveillance
This information comes to you from NIOSH, and it seems to be that the government has to
carry the industry line as their opening comment: "When used properly, pesticides offer a variety
of benefits to society. They increase crop production, preserve produce, combat insect
infestations, and control exotic species." At least they go on to state: "However, pesticides also
have the potential for causing harm. Approximately one billion pounds of pesticide active ingredient
are used annually in the U.S., and over 20,000 pesticide products are being marketed in the U.S."
The problem is, pesticides cause harm, even when used "properly" or "according to label
directions." It's the nature of the beast. And the harm is caused to people, their pets, and the
other creatures with whom we share this planet. -- barb

Also, immediately following is fragrance information, which leads me to wonder: How many
dermatologists know this? How many patients know of this to copy and take into their doctors?
Where are the procedures for supplying fragrance information promptly to internists, ENTs,
thoracic specialists??? Why not print out the information and take it to your doctor? -- barb
IFRA's "Procedures for supplying fragrance information promptly
to dermatologists "
"The following procedure has been approved by the International Fragrance
Association (IFRA), including all its regional and national associations (e.g. in
Europe, Japan, North and South America) and has been shared with COLIPA
(The European Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association), CTFA (Cosmetics,
Toiletry and Fragrance Association, US) and JCIA (Japanese Cosmetic Industry
Association). ..."
This file, as a Word document, carries this date reference . . .

Interestingly, the date doesn't appear on the document one can get
as HTML through Google.

These procedures were put in place nearly three years to the day after EHN filed its
Citizens' Petition with the US Food and Drug Administration -- 99P-1340. Is there any connection?
Who knows? And are there procedures pertaining to the neurotoxic effects of fragrance chemicals,
or their possible carcinogenic, teratogenic, respiratory effects, ...? I don't know as I've yet to
find any formal recognition by the industry that there's any problem with breathing
fragrances at primary, secondary, and yes, even tertiary levels of exposure.
Mind you, the information may be available, but I have yet to find it. The most I've come to learn
is through the article by Francesca Lyman, published in February 2002 and re-released October
2002, Scents and sensitivities, in which it was stated: "In response to the perceived
problems of fragrances in the air, Roberts [Glenn Roberts, spokesperson for the Research Institute
for Fragrance Materials, an industry-sponsored group that does testing of chemicals] says that his
industry group has begun the first study to examine fragrance inhalation. 'We're spending a lot
of money on this,' he says, 'to understand the systemic effects of fragrances on organs and nervous
system, what happens when fragrances are inhaled.' " -- barb

I have built links to the RTECS or the EPA's TSCA -- and other sources when RTECS and
TSCA information was lacking -- based on the following CAS numbers.
You might be
interested in looking up the CAS numbers on MSDS sheets. For example, I looked up
CAS# 105-13-5 (listed below as Anise Alcohol) and found this information:
Section 3 - Hazards Identification, Including Emergency Overview
4-METHOXYBENZENEMETHANOL, O-220
Health Hazards Acute & Chronic: ALL CHEMICALS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED HAZARDOUS - AVOID DIRECT
PHYSICAL CONTACT! CAN BE HARMFUL IF INHALED. CAN BE HARMFUL IF SWALLOWED. CAN BE
HARMFUL IF ABSORBED THROUGH SKIN. THIS COMPOUND IS CONSIDERED TO BE SLIGHTLY TOXIC. ...
... Section 4 - First Aid Measures
4-METHOXYBENZENEMETHANOL, O-220

We are supposed to take it on blind faith and industry assurances that fragrance chemical
concoctions are not harmful to our health. The "thorough" testing has been for the dermatological
(skin) effects to the primary user. Yet these toxins volatilize to become one with the air we all
must breathe and there is no attention paid to the effects of these toxic brews at the secondary
or tertiary levels of exposures, whether its the body's largest organ the skin, or the respiratory
system, the brain or other organs. We need some evidence of that "sound" science that the
industry keeps assuring us exists.
Right now, there are far too many questions about these toxins, not enough answers and not
enough government agencies studying the adverse events associated with perfume pollution.
Plus there are too many mainstream doctors who ignore the chemical composition of fragrances
and yet stultify their patients.
As long as I'm on a roll here, why not go into CDC (notice how they don't use the initial "P" for
the most important part of their name, PREVENTION????) Web Search page and enter some
of the CAS numbers below, then check out the various documents that pop up.
