Shell Family in California, May 2003
Mount Tamalpais
Welcome to sunny California! We're on the west face of the mountain, a little below the road that heads from the peak along the ridge above the Pacific.
Wildflowers (lupine) in the foreground, ocean (Pacific) in the background. The soft, steep rolling hills are characteristic of the western slope of the mountain.
The path up to the peak, here paved with ties from the old cog-wheel railroad that used to run up the mountain.
Rock garden.
Looking down at Marin County, tastefully overrun with very expensive houses. Gorgeous green in spring.
And the Bay, too.
The Shell Men, capturing the spirit of adventure.
That's the Richmond/San Rafael Bridge, with San Pablo Bay and the Carquinez Bridge to the left.
Rocky epiphany.
The "originals".
Yep.
The lookout tower, looking inviting. Elevation approx 2700'.
Scaling the tower, barbed wire be damned. I told Seaney there'd be a six-pack in it for him if he made it.
That's the road up to the peak in the background. A few minutes later major fog had engulfed the area. Good timing!
Warm is as warm does.
"I think I'll take the hard way down. Meet you in San Rafael?"
Contrary to popular opinion, that yellow sign says "Danger - Keep On".
Roughin' it.
Rocky revelations, or...
Challenging channels?
Onwards and downwards!
