Architectural Installation Room A-21 California College of Arts and Crafts Oakland, CA |
room: 13'W x 27.5'L x 10' to 16' sloping ceiling height
I built a twenty four and a half foot long wall into the space of CCAC's room A-21; the only room on either of the two CCAC campuses dedicated to installation work at the time. It was also a site for class critiques and slide viewing. My objective was to reveal the capacity of this room to contain an inspired large scale site specific installation with little or no imposition to the room's existing functions. |

Upon entering the portal just wide enough for the shoulders to pass through, the narrower side of the two spaces expanded in width and height . It was lit solely by day light from a window at the top end of the room. |

The larger side of the two spaces had no natural light element and remained dark. Florescent ceiling lights could be turned on or off in the lager space. This side maintained A-21's function of a place to view slides and to conduct group critiques. |
