Terra Nova, Sculpture & Vessels in Clay

Opening January 13, 2005 at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York City, this exhibition features ceramic artworks that have been acquired in the past five years for the permanent collection of the museum. Comprised of 30 plus objects by artists from the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia, it was organized by the museum’s curator of collections, Ursula Ilse-Neuman. Marilyn Levine’s trompe l’oeil sculpture, Anne’s Jacket, recently purchased for the collection, is among the pieces on view. Pictured at left, it was executed in 1990 and is 36 inches in length.

Regina Clay: Worlds in the Making

Curated by Timothy Long of the MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, Saskatchewan, this exhibition, which will tour nationally through Canada, focuses on ceramic work being done in Regina between 1965 and 1975. From 1964 to 1969, Levine initially studied pottery and sculpture with Beth Hone, Ricardo Gomez and Jack Sures in Regina and later taught ceramics there. Leaving in the spring of 1969 for the University of California at Berkeley to obtain a graduate degree in sculpture, she then returned to Canada in 1971 to teach ceramics for the next two years but for a spring 1972 hiatus at the University of California, Davis where she was a Visiting Lecturer in ceramics and sabbatical replacement for Bob Arneson.

Among Levine’s works to be in the show are an early non-objective sculpture made in 1969, several 1970 transitional pop/funk pieces including Soft Empties and Sailor’s Cap and representing her signature realist sculptures, Bob’s Cowboy Boots and Dufour Backpack, both made in 1973 and pictured at left.

The exhibition debuts at the Museum London in Ontario on March 5, 2005 and will be on view through May 29th; it then travels to the Burlington Art Centre in Ontario in August, to the MacKenzie Art Gallery and to the Kelowna Art Gallery in British Columbia. Fired at Davis: Sculpture by Robert Arneson, his Colleagues and Students. Ceramics from the Paula and Ross Turk Collection

Hilarie Faberman of the Iris & B. Gerald Cantor Center for Visual Arts at Stanford University in California is curating an exhibition of approximately 35 works from the collection of Paula and Ross Turk that probes the influence of Bob Arneson’s philosophy and work in ceramics. Among the artists in the show will be Marilyn Levine who will be represented with her high fire ceramic and leather laces sculpture entitled, John’s Other Boots, made in 1972, and pictured at left.
