This workshop is designed to teach both the art and science of working with the wisdom and resources of the body to heal mind-body symptoms and health problems while reversing the effects of psychological and physical trauma. Although the body is acknowledged as an important partner in the healing process, there are few models that can be applied effectively in a wide variety of settings, including mental health, education, medical clinics, and public and community health. The model of Somatic Experiencing® (SE), based on the study of resiliency responses of animals and humans to threat, provides gentle yet powerful interventions that can be incorporated into any practice setting.
Topic areas for discussion will include treatment of anxiety, panic, and depression; persistent emotional and physical pain including headache, arthritis, back pain; autoimmune problems such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, and lupus; and conflicts related to eating disorders and distortions of body image and awareness. We will explore the interface between trauma and pain; the neurobiology of attachment trauma and other post-traumatic phenomena; relevant psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) research, and the importance of teaching self-regulation.
Participants will learn how Somatic Experiencing® techniques can be used to detect and resolve constriction in the body and disregulation of the nervous system that contributes to a wide spectrum of clinical, medical, and learning problems. Presentations will address ways to empower clients through contact with their bodies’ natural resources, strategies for reducing fear and anxiety, and techniques for rapid relief of acute and long-term stress reactions.

Telephone Course Reversing Chronic Pain: 10 Steps to Lasting Relief
Are you a persistent pain sufferer looking for relief beyond what you've been able to achieve through the effects of medications, physical therapy, and other common interventions used to treat pain? Have you struggled with pain for more than a year and believe you have gone as far as you can with the treatments you've received so far? Have you been told that you need to learn to "live with your pain" because for you it will always be a chronic condition?
My new approach may be just what you've been searching for! As a psychologist who has specialized in the treatment of chronic stress conditions during 30 years of clinical practice, I have developed a brief, intensive treatment model that has reversed the course of chronic pain successfully for many of my patients. The cost is far below what you might pay for either psychotherapy or medical treatments.

He is Board Certified in Neurology, and has been in practice for 36 years, twenty of those as Medical Director of Rehabilitation Services at the Mapleton Center in Boulder, CO. His primary areas of interest and expertise have been in the fields of traumatic brain injury and chronic pain, and more recently in the study of traumatic stress and its role in physical and emotional symptoms, and in diseases.
He has lectured extensively in the field of traumatic stress, and has published several articles on posttraumatic stress disorder, dissociation, the whiplash syndrome and other somatic syndromes of traumatic stress. He has published two books, the first The Body Bears the Burden: Trauma, Dissociation and Disease, presenting a new theory of dissociation and its role in many diseases. A second book, The Trauma Spectrum: Hidden Wounds and Human Resiliency, addresses the broad and relatively unappreciated spectrum of cultural and societal trauma that shapes every aspect of our lives. He is currently retired from clinical medical practice, and continues to pursue a career in writing and lecturing in the field of traumatology, giving workshops and lectures in the United States, Europe and South America to treatment centers, professional organizations and societies that specialize in the treatment of life trauma.

Many patients with problems that appear resistant to treatment suffer from attachment trauma within their early relationships. This needs to be re-paired through the therapy relationship as well as by working with internal parts of the self, called ego states, that often contribute to symptoms and other difficulties. Many methods are used to find and work with more unconscious ego states in order to help them cooperate with the rest of the personality so that heal-ing can take place. These methods include techniques drawn from the experiential tools found in hypnosis, Somatic Experiencing® , interactive and structured im-agery, EMDR and Energy Psychology.
