The following questions were given to Captain Dunbar at the May 5th,1999 DIA meeting. He answered questions during the meeting and has taken the time to put his answers in writing for posting on the Dimond web site.

We thank him and look forward to working with him to ensure that the neighborhood can have a safe Dimond park this summer.

What is the plan to improve safety in Dimond Park this summer?
Although we don't have a written plan, we have several tactics that we will utilize this year. The beat officer will drive and walk through the park on a daily basis, around the clock. This means that officers will patrol during the day and afternoon, looking for potential problems, and taking action as necessary. In the evenings and early morning, we will continue our patrols to insure no one is in the park after dusk, and remove those who remain inside the park. This means arresting, citing and warning people to discourage their return while the park is closed.

For large or events with permits, we will monitor them to make sure they comply with city ordinances. Failure to comply will result in shutting down the function.

If you notice a large event that may be out of compliance, please call our non-emergency number of 238-3333. We need your help on alerting us to illegal activities in the park.

How are the Rangers and OPD coordinating coverage of parks?
The Rangers will continue to monitor the parks as their primary responsibility. We will work with them for enforcement actions, and coordinate our tactics for planned events in the park.

The Special Events Unit will notify Sergeant Golphin and myself of any events that have sought permits for using the park.

What is the plan to decrease crime in the neighborhoods
around the park (on weekends)?
This involves dealing immediately with any problems, and remaining visible in the neighborhood following the closing of events. Our visibility will greatly decrease criminal conduct in these areas.
What is the weekend schedule for OPD covering Dimond Park?
We will utilize our beat officers, in addition to Rangers, for patrolling the parks. If the Special Events Unit approves a large event, the promoter may be compelled to pay for police presence at the event.
Who is the senior officer in charge on weekends?
I am "in-charge" of this area on a constant basis. In my absence, there will be at least one patrol lieutenant who serves as the watch commander for each shift. They can be reached through the Patrol Desk at 238-3455.
