I just learned of the DimondNews website and wanted to post a hello to
my many (as yet) unmet neighbors. My partner Robert and I bought the
house at 3615 Fruitvale Avenue in March. We erected a fence because of what
was a long standing habit of folks cutting across the church property (on
Dimond Avenue) and through what is now our yard to get to Fruitvale Avenue
and the Safeway or the bus. It seems to have caused some consternation
and resentment with the local teenagers. We are avid gardeners and also very
private, and the fence protects both of these proclivities. (I designed the
fence and trellis, and we also think it beautifies the house). We wanted our
neighbors to know that it is our intention, as we expand our garden, to
beautify our own small piece of the Dimond district and hope the roses and
flowers offer a bit of visual refreshment when you pass by-and even though
we're "fenced in" - we look forward to meeting many of you over the next few
months

Hi Chris and Robert and welcome to the Dimond neighborhood. I walk past your yard every day and enjoy looking at
Janet Broughton
Hi Chris and Robert!
We also put up a fence that disrupted a shortcut kids liked to take (from
Garden Street to McKillop). The kids didn't like it, but we found out
later that a lot of the adults nearby were silently cheering us on. So you
probably have some secret fans among your neighbors, too!
If you're gardeners, keep your eyes peeled for some avid fellow gardeners
next time you stroll up Dimond Ave.: Linda and Mike, who are planting such
nice stuff on the vacant lot next to the apartment building, and further up
toward the Park, Helen and Peggy, who have growing tables in their front
yard. They are wholesale growers of organic vegetable seedlings but also
for fun grow an abundance of unusual flowers and shrubs.
Chris and Robert,
Thank you for your e-mail.
I'm so pleased you want to help out with
flowers in the Dimond. I will phone you in August, as you requested.
Welcome to the neighborhood, by the way. I have heard much praise for
the fence you've put up and the garden you are growing. Keep up the
good work. I'll talk with you in August.
