The Hillcrest sign is down! I want to express my heart-felt gratitude to Ann Nomura and all of the Dimond residents who worked so hard and effectively to bring us to this happy day. And my hat is off to Hillcrest owner David Chou for responding to our concerns, and to Councilmember Dick Spees for mediating our work with Mr. Chou.

I couldn't really believe Ann N. when she called to tell me the sign was coming down. But this morning when I walked out to my back yard there was nothing but wide open sky to greet me! After 9 1/2 years of seeing that ugly yellow motel sign from my back yard, my bedroom window, and everywhere in my neighborhood, it has FINALLY disappeared! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you to all who have responded to the blight of that sign. I am truly grateful.

I went to the Hillcrest at 7:15 this morning and watched the two cranes and the flatbed trucks and the crew start the process of taking down the sign. Ann had called me with the news. I just wanted to share a great symbolic moment with you, since so much time and effort and patience have poured into this problem. Later, at noon, when the job was done I dropped in at the office there and thanked David Chou. A lot of sticky wickets lie ahead, but I feel optimistic about the future. I hope the demise of the sign is a good augury. Toni L.
