Neighbors Meet With Hillcrest Motel Owner
by Ann Nomura

The Hillcrest Motel committee of the DIA, Beat 22X NCPC, and Boston Neighbors sent a letter to the owners of the Hillcrest requesting a meeting to discuss the abatement of crime and blight (February, 1999.)

This committee met with the owner at Councilmember Spees’ office on Wednesday, March 24th. Neighbors requested that the Hillcrest:

  1. Hire a security guard
  2. that they remove the yellow motel sign
  3. that they install a fence to minimize traffic at the corner of Lincoln and MacArthur
  4. and that appropriate landscaping be installed around the perimeter.
The motel owner agreed to:
  1. Hire a security guard for evenings and weekends
  2. He has already spoken to one contractor about removing the motel sign if the cost is prohibitive, the city will work with the owner to identify city subsidies
  3. A design committee with a community member, the City Manager’s office and the OPD was established to discuss the fence
  4. A landscape committee with a community member, the owner, and Council Member Spees’ office was established to discuss appropriate planting

The Motel owner appeared willing and eager to work with the neighborhood. A timeline was developed to monitor all projects, so we hope to see visible improvements in the next two months.

We owe a special thanks to Councilmember Richard Spees and Niccolo DeLuca for their support on this project.
