Rebecca Kaplan: Candidate for Oakland City Council, at-large seat

Dear Tim Chapman,

Thanks very much for your phone message encouraging me to contact your organization online. My name is Rebecca Kaplan, and I am running for Oakland City Council, at-large seat, in the November 7th 2000 elections.

I definitely believe in using email and the web as much as possible, and appreciate the time and resources that it saves. (Unfortunately, the list of contact information from Oakland's city staff listing all of Oakland's neighborhood associations does not contain email addresses or web sites -- I hope to help correct this omission once I'm elected).

Some of the things that I would like to do with the internet and city programs include:

1. making all city council and committee agendas, reports and minutes available online in a fully-searchable format to allow people to track issues of concern to them. Allow people to sign up to receive email updates on specific issues.
2. create a web and email-based city newsletter (probably weekly) with updates, information, and event listings
3. help local businesses thrive with a strong "buy-local" program, including creating a directory of local businesses, and making the directory available online
4. host periodic live online discussion forums where Oakland residents can share their views and suggestions
