Rebecca Kaplan: Candidate for Oakland City Council, at-large seat

Dear Tim Chapman

I am writing to you as someone who is active in your community, to let you know about my candidacy for Oakland City Council, and to offer to meet with the Dimond Improvement Association. In the March primary election I succeeded in obtaining enough votes to advance to the run-off against incumbent Henry Chang for the at-large seat, which will be elected citywide on November 7th.

I am eager to serve on our city council in order to contribute my energy and experience to meeting the needs of all Oakland residents. I will be a responsive councilmember and am the only candidate who has promised serve on the council as my exclusive full-time job. (Since the council receives a full-time salary, it seems reasonable to expect this commitment).

I have the training and experience to be an effective councilperson, including a Master's in Urban and Environmental Policy (Tufts University), and a law degree from Stanford. My work experience includes the City of Cambridge Commission on the Status of Women, working as an attorney in Oakland handling civil rights, tenant, and environmental cases, serving in the Oakland office of Assemblywoman Bock, and a history of community organizing and activism.

If elected, I will hold regular open meetings to ensure that your needs are being heard. I am using this same approach in my campaign, and would welcome an opportunity to meet with your organization to hear your ideas and input, and to answer any questions you may have. If you prefer a debate format, I would be happy to participate. You can contact my opponent, Henry Chang, at 832-5816.

Please contact my office at (510) 465-5193 or visit www.rebeccakaplan.org if you have any questions, or wish to schedule a meeting.

Thank you very much for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Rebecca Kaplan
