Following is a copy of the resolution brought before the Alameda Country Board of Supervisors at theirJuly 13 meeting,
The supervisors approved Supervisor Mary King's resolution by a 5-0 vote.
Immediately prior to the vote, after comments came from CalTrans, Sup. King said, "Well, I happen to be very proud to represent the only district in the country with an Interstate freeway where trucks are banned only for quality-of- life reasons."
RESOLUTION IN OPPOSITION TO ANY ACTION TO RECONSIDER OR RESCIND THE PROHIBITION OF TRUCKS ON THE MACARTHUR FREEWAY SECTION OF INTERSTATE 580
WHEREAS, access to the MacArthur Freeway section of Interstate 580 beginning at Grand Avenue in Oakland has been denied to trucks weighing in excess of 4-1/2 tons since the freeway was opened in 1962, pursuant to Oakland City Ordinance No. 6789 CMS; and
WHEREAS, the prohibition was approved by the California Department of Public Works; and
WHEREAS, the United States Department of Commerce authorized the prohibitions when the trucking industry was regulated under its jurisdiction; and
WHEREAS, trucks were prohibited along MacArthur Boulevard, prior to the construction of the freeway, when that thoroughfare became a state highway in 1951; and
WHEREAS, the addition of trucks to the traffic flow on the MacArthur Freeway will have significant negative impacts on public safety and the environment; and
WHEREAS, the freeway transects primarily residential areas in Oakland and San Leandro, where few services or destinations exist for trucks, and where residents strongly favor the prohibition of trucks; and
WHEREAS, recent news reports have suggested that consideration is underway to rescind the prohibition; now therefore be it
RESOLVED: That the Alameda County Board of Supervisors hereby oppose any action to reconsider or rescind the prohibition of trucks on the MacArthur Freeway section of Interstate 580 pursuant to Oakland City Ordinance No. 6789 CMS.
