Just wanted to share a wonderful internet service we recently discovered with our Dimond neighbors who also find the Safeway unsatisfactory: www.webvan.com

Webvan will deliver directly to your home/apartment on the time and day you specify, has a HUGE selection of items, organic produce, upscale bath products, all your day to day items (cat litter, laundry detergent, Kleenex), prepared foods, deli items-even wonderful fresh seafood-and prices are comparable (sometimes less) to the supermarket and delivery is FREE. (No, I don't have stock in Webvan-just despise the Safeway...)

Happy Thanksgiving to all our neighbors-those we've met and those online.

I agree with Chris about Webvan, though I suspect some day they will start adding a delivery charge. If you try Webvan, be sure to create a list. It saves a lot of time on future orders. I felt a bit bad about getting groceries delivered: when I go to Safeway I run into neighbors, and without our shopping support our local businesses will go bust. On the other hand, about 6 people on my block have made a point of stopping to chat with me after seeing the delivery truck, to ask how the service works, so I've met some new neighbors. And our local Safeway is really not a good store. On my last few trips it was out of about a third of the things on my list. And at least Webvan is an Oakland-based business and is employing a lot of Oakland people (I think).

I would rather see us as a neighborhood petition corporate Safeway to upgrade our store like they did the store on Grand Avenue. I've lived here for 20 years (on and off). Over 10 years ago, when Safeway closed the Fruitvale store at Foothill, everyone from that neighborhood was forced to travel to Dimond Safeway. It has been crowded and stock has been steadily declining since. I like the prices at Safeway, and I do not want to go to Grand Avenue, 51st, or Montclair to shop.

Let's see if the DIA can mobilize some action on this. Safeway needs to be convinced that spending some money on this store will get them a higher return.

I met the new Dimond Safeway manager today. His name is Joseph Chappelle, and he mentioned that the Grand Avenue model might work in the Dimond neighborhood.

He suggested that we contact his Division President to communicate our desire to have a remodeled Safeway continue to serve our neighborhood.
