Melissa Virus Information

On Monday, March 29, SBCEO Internet Services was made aware of the Microsoft Word macro virus named Melissa that is spreading throughout the Internet. Generally, this virus is propagated via users of Microsoft Outlook. Only users of Microsoft Word 97 and Word 2000 will become infected. However, if you do become infected with the Word virus, it can be spread via other methods of sharing files. To help our users avoid infection from this virus and to prevent further propagation, we have compiled an outline of information and links:

    1. First of all, don't panic. By following some simple steps, you can avoid infection from this virus.

    2. To prevent infection from this and all other viruses, it is recommended that users run an anti-virus software program at all times on their computer and keep it updated with the latest files from the vendor.

    3. If you use MS Outlook or Outlook Express, disable the "Use Word as your e-mail editor" feature. If you use Microsoft Word 97, ensure that Macro Virus Protection is turned on. Reference your Microsoft software documentation for these instructions.

    4. DO NOT OPEN any messages with the following in the subject: "Important Message From ..." unless you have previously verified with the sender that the message was intentionally sent.

    5. Read about this virus and recommendations at the following websites:
