Bath Houses

The bathhouses are constructed with earth excavated for foundations on the site, demonstrating that the buildings can literally grow from place. The durable, stabilized earth walls are topped with a roof structure that is made with certified wood and capped with durable metal roofing. The roofs are designed to collect rainwater and support solar collectors. The open-air structures house restrooms, showers, and changing rooms for the adjacent swimming pool.
The open-air structures are not conditioned, and therefore did not require Title 24 compliance. However, the design reflects careful attention to comfort and energy savings in the following ways

> Slatted screening provides air movement and privacy
> Woven mesh screening provides air movement, daylight and views
> Natural ventilation moves moisture laden air from showers out of the buildings
> High thermal mass in the floors and walls create a cool haven on hot days
> Electric lighting, which is generally not needed, is compact fluorescent
> The building is pre-plumbed for future solar water heating
> High efficiency water heating is used for showers
