Employment training and job placement assistance are major focuses of the school. Full-time counselors help students with resume and cover letter writing, as well as with completing job applications and workshops on how to keep a job. Classes prepare students with skills necessary to participate in today's workforce.
"We have special and demanding roles in today's economy," explains Principal Margaret Kirkpatrick. "We are charged with re-training a wide variety of workers displaced by economic conditions and with providing a second chance for adults to complete basic educational requirements. We offer courses that make our students more competitive members of the workforce."
The Adult School is helping at home, as well. In collaboration with BUSD elementary schools and the Early Childhood Education Program, the Adult School is planning to offer courses to parents at individual elementary and preschool sites, in such areas as Reading with Your Child, Assertive Discipline, and Homework Made Easier. Other courses under discussion include English as a Second Language, General Equivalency Diploma and Citizenship. For information as to the availability of courses at a particular school site, see that school's principal.
