EAST CAMPUS CONTINUATION SCHOOL
1950 CARLETON STREET * 644-6159 * JOHN L. BROWN, PRINCIPAL

East Campus offers an alternative high school program for students who need extra academic and personal assistance. The small size of the school and smaller classes enable the staff members to get to know their students and provide individualized instruction. Students pursue a self-paced program, which allows them to "catch up" with the credits they need to graduate.

The school has recently developed a new double-period schedule, which allows students to choose enrichment courses in a wide range of areas. Students are also encouraged to take supplemental classes at Vista and Laney Colleges and at Berkeley Adult School as an alternative means of earning required credits. East Campus has a small but growing library, and a computer lab, which students use to publish their annual anthology of artwork, poetry and short stories. Student support services are offered through the Educational Guidance Center, UC Berkeley financial services, the Drug Awareness And Prevention Program (DAPP), as well as the school's counseling program.

Many East Campus students express their preference for the school's smaller, more personal environment. "I was lost at Berkeley High School and had started cutting class," one student said. "Now I want to be in school. I know everyone here and I feel like we're part of a family."

INDEPENDENT STUDY PROGRAM * 644-8592 * MICHELE JANSSEN, DIRECTOR

This program, also located at East Campus, supports "home schooling" for elementary and middle school students and independent study for high school students who are not able to attend regular classes for any number of reasons. Students and their families who are interested in learning more about the programs are invited to call for a more detailed description of the programs and requirements.
