Yes, we all have to go sometime, but let's strive for quality of life in the meantime. If each of us

People may be quick to see the connection between DEHP and plastics as it makes them softer

I suggest LISTENING to the patient, or the patient's mother! IF one studies the modern petrochemically derived concoctions, innocuously termed "fragrance," AND, if one realized that hospitals and homes were flagrantly fragranced, one just might learn that infants can have eczema "right at birth." There's the disinfectants and the soaps and the perfumes used by staff, visitors, parents, shampoos and conditioners, lotions, air "fresheners," deodorizers, scented disposable diapers and wipes, scented baby lotions, and the detergents and the fabric softeners. The list of scented products goes on and on and scented products should not go on newborns! But, fragrances affect more than just the skin of the user. The chemicals volatilize to adversely affect all -- some sooner than later. That's diversity for you! Bear in mind, there is AIRBORNE contact dermatitis. -- barb

- Why is chemical brain injury ignored? Pondering causes and risks.(Editorial)
Archives of Environmental Health, March, 2003, by Kaye H. Kilburn
Dr. Kilburn writes, in part:
"I presume that the numerous factors that currently slow both individuals' and society's
acceptance of chemicals as major causes of diseases are the same as those that created
opposition so many years ago to the demonstration that fecal contamination of water
caused cholera. I think it imperative to identify 13 such factors. ...
"3. 'It's all in your head.' Sometimes physicians dismiss unfamiliar problems of patients
with this rejoinder, implying that the perceived problem stems from a mind disorder
or a psychiatric problem. Seldom is the broader, literal interpretation made--that "in your
head" means a brain problem. While 'mind' may be a nebulous concept, brain
dysfunction is susceptible to orderly, objective investigation. It is strange that few
psychiatrists, when evaluating chemically exposed patients, consider that the depression,
mania, and other disorders they treat with drugs (chemicals) could be caused by
other chemicals. Instead, the tendency is to prescribe more chemicals (drugs), thus
further poisoning the brains of such patients. "

Asking for a diagnosis? Doctors love codes-- give 'em the following sets of codes, along
with the analyses of perfumes that form the basis of EHN's 1999 FDA Citizens'

Pesticide Illness & Injury Surveillance
This information comes to you from NIOSH, and it seems to be that the government has to
carry the industry line as their opening comment: "When used properly, pesticides offer a variety
of benefits to society. They increase crop production, preserve produce, combat insect
infestations, and control exotic species." At least they go on to state: "However, pesticides also
have the potential for causing harm. Approximately one billion pounds of pesticide active ingredient
are used annually in the U.S., and over 20,000 pesticide products are being marketed in the U.S."
The problem is, pesticides cause harm, even when used "properly" or "according to label
directions." It's the nature of the beast. And the harm is caused to people, their pets, and the
other creatures with whom we share this planet. -- barb

Also, immediately following is fragrance information, which leads me to wonder: How many
dermatologists know this? How many patients know of this to copy and take into their doctors?
Where are the procedures for supplying fragrance information promptly to internists, ENTs,
thoracic specialists??? Why not print out the information and take it to your doctor? -- barb
IFRA's "Procedures for supplying fragrance information promptly
to dermatologists "
"The following procedure has been approved by the International Fragrance
Association (IFRA), including all its regional and national associations (e.g. in
Europe, Japan, North and South America) and has been shared with COLIPA
(The European Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association), CTFA (Cosmetics,
Toiletry and Fragrance Association, US) and JCIA (Japanese Cosmetic Industry

These procedures were put in place nearly three years to the day after EHN filed its
Citizens' Petition with the US Food and Drug Administration -- 99P-1340. Is there any connection?
Who knows? And are there procedures pertaining to the neurotoxic effects of fragrance chemicals,
or their possible carcinogenic, teratogenic, respiratory effects, ...? I don't know as I've yet to
find any formal recognition by the industry that there's any problem with breathing
fragrances at primary, secondary, and yes, even tertiary levels of exposure.
Mind you, the information may be available, but I have yet to find it. The most I've come to learn
is through the article by Francesca Lyman, published in February 2002 and re-released October
2002, Scents and sensitivities, in which it was stated: "In response to the perceived
problems of fragrances in the air, Roberts [Glenn Roberts, spokesperson for the Research Institute
for Fragrance Materials, an industry-sponsored group that does testing of chemicals] says that his
industry group has begun the first study to examine fragrance inhalation. 'We're spending a lot
of money on this,' he says, 'to understand the systemic effects of fragrances on organs and nervous
system, what happens when fragrances are inhaled.' " -- barb

I have built links to the RTECS or the EPA's TSCA -- and other sources when RTECS and
TSCA information was lacking -- based on the following CAS numbers.

We are supposed to take it on blind faith and industry assurances that fragrance chemical
concoctions are not harmful to our health. The "thorough" testing has been for the dermatological
(skin) effects to the primary user. Yet these toxins volatilize to become one with the air we all
must breathe and there is no attention paid to the effects of these toxic brews at the secondary
or tertiary levels of exposures, whether its the body's largest organ the skin, or the respiratory
system, the brain or other organs. We need some evidence of that "sound" science that the
industry keeps assuring us exists.
Right now, there are far too many questions about these toxins, not enough answers and not
enough government agencies studying the adverse events associated with perfume pollution.
Plus there are too many mainstream doctors who ignore the chemical composition of fragrances
and yet stultify their patients.
As long as I'm on a roll here, why not go into CDC (notice how they don't use the initial "P" for
the most important part of their name, PREVENTION????) Web Search page and enter some
of the CAS numbers below, then check out the various documents that pop up.

Chemical Sensitivity
It's a Serious Problem More Often Than You Think!!!
"The source of the problem
"There are over 70,000 chemicals commercially produced in the United States today,
many of which were developed after World War II. The long-term, low dose effects of
many of these chemicals have never been investigated. In fact, the term 'low dose'' is
misleading, implying low concentrations are harmless. . . . "
http://www.accessnewage.com/articles/health/chemical.htm
- Transcript of testimony of Dr. Adrienne Buffaloe on the effects of pesticides
on people, particularly malathion and pyrethroids based on her own evaluations of her
patients, before hearings held by a Congressional panel chaired by Congressional
representative Gerald Ackerman, of Queens NY.
"... Malathion, the manufacturer's own sheets state what the health effects are.
There is a note on those data sheets to the doctors informing the doctors that
Pipanol and Malathion can cause respiratory, cardiac and neurological dysfunction,
including coma, muscle spasms, labor breathing, frothing of the mouth and nose,
nausea, vomiting, headache, and weakness. [emphasis added] "
"...Pyrethrins or Pyrethroids, ... causes severe allergy attacks in sensitive people,
dermatitis, asthma, rhinitis, anaphylactic reactions, numbness of the lips and tongue,
sneezing, vomiting, diarrhea, ringing in the ears and restlessness; it can also cause
convulsions, which is seizures, incoordination, and death from respiratory paralysis.
"To say that these pesticides are perfectly safe is an outrage. With Resmethrin or
Pyrethroid, it's particularly problematic, because the first death from a Pyrethroid
exposure was reported right here in New York City in 1994, just five years before
the spraying, by the current director of the New York City Poison Center. And that
article has been given to the legislators, and it is in your packet. This death was as a
result of a very brief exposure to Pyrethroid. ..." [emphasis added]

Dr. Gloria Gilbere, who has been working extensively with MCS
patients has been asked to write a weekly newspaper column that
will be called "Second Hand Reactions."
Share your stories of challenges, solutions, and living with
MCS/EI/FM. The stories should be about what you want people to know
in order to provide compassionate support, educate the public,
what's helped you most in living with and or overcoming the disorder.
It will be an advice-type column that serves millions in sharing
experiences and educating. Your identity will be protected, if
you so choose. Write in about negative experiences with drug side
effects, challenges in lack of accommodations, or negative
experiences in receiving health care, employment, etc. - anything
relating to these disorders that will continue to educate the public.
We are not attempting to educate the people who already know about
MCS; we're trying to reach all those who are not supportive and
don't have a clue. The column will be weekly, so she needs on-going
stories!

- DEFINING CHEMICAL INJURY: A Diagnostic Protocol and Profile of
Chemically Injured Civilians, Industrial Workers and Gulf War Veterans
G. Heuser, M.D.,Ph.D., P. Axelrod, and S. Heuser, M.A.
INTRODUCTION
Chemical injury can cause severe, often disabling multi-system complaints, which may persist for months and at times years after chemical exposure has ceased. Physicians who see chemically injured patients are frequently baffled when they face a patient with multiple complaints, which do not fit into a known diagnostic disease category. Furthermore, regular laboratory tests (e.g. CBC, liver function tests, sedimentation rate,
urinalysis) are often normal as is a cursory physical examination.
The diagnostic exploration of a chemically injured patient is a new field, which is difficult for the inexperienced physician. Chemically injured patients often complain of impaired cognitive and memory functions, intermittent confusion and disorientation, changes in behavior and mood, word-finding problems, sleep disorders, decreased libido and potency. At times they complain of seizure-like events. They also often report
recurrent flu-like symptoms, fatigue and exhaustion, malaise, headaches, and chronic pain. Skin rashes, gastrointestinal complaints, and other health effects may also be present. Different patients may react differently to a given chemical or group of chemicals.
Toxic effects cannot be objectively evaluated unless every involved system is studied with advanced and sophisticated methodology. Without benefit of that process, a chemically injured patient will be dismissed with a diagnosis of post- traumatic stress disorder, somatization disorder or other labels implying that "it's all in their heads" [Davidoff, et al., 2000]. The largest patient population to have received such a diagnosis is that of the Persian Gulf War Veterans. As of the writing of this article, nine years after the armed conflict, several hundred thousand veterans still suffer from a host of symptoms called "Persian Gulf War Illness" which may in large part be due to chemical injury [Jamal, 1998; Everson et al., 1999]. ...

- FUNCTIONAL BRAIN SCANNING WITH SPECT AFTER
NEUROTOXIC CHEMICAL EXPOSURE
"Government and the public have for years addressed the potential cancer causing effects
of chemicals. They have neglected the fact that chemicals can be neurotoxic and at
times disabling in that capacity. They have also neglected the fact that impairment of
brain function can outlast neurotoxic exposure for many years.
"Typical symptoms after exposure can be impairment of cognitive and memory
functions, inability to perform more then one task at a time, intermittent confusion and
disorientation, impairment of speech, balance and coordination, and others. ..."

Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients - January 2001
"... My personal experience (I have evaluated several thousands of chemically
injured patients) has convinced me that MCS is based on a physiological and not on
a psychological mechanism. This is why I have been interested in finding objective
evidence for MCS. In this paper I will present a mast cell hypothesis, a limbic system
hypothesis, and an office approach to objective testing for MCS.

"New research underway at Duke University could yield clues to how chemicals
used by U.S. soldiers during the Persian Gulf War may have intermingled and caused
neurotoxic effects in some veterans. The combined, or synergistic, effects from three
chemicals: pyridostigmine bromide, DEET, and permethrin, may have caused some of

- DOSE . . . as in "The dose makes the poison."
This expression is used by industry and lobbyists in their effort to get their products to market
and used!, without full substantiation of safety. It is also the cop out of toxicologists with an
industry bias who love to look at only one chemical at a time and then claim, the dose is so low it
has no adverse effect. There is obviously no regard for amount of chemicals breathed in and
absorbed in any one day, nor for the accumlative, or systemic effects, nor for long-term exposures.
Of course, they throw this tired bromide out to the public: The dose makes the poison.
Well, yes it does . . . but not as they mean it. It's just like a mainstream western medical doctor
who has declared that MCS or fragrance sensitization is "ALL IN YOUR HEAD!" Yes it is
in one's head because one's brains are there and fragrances contain chemicals that are
known neurotoxins! In this case of the dose makes the poison line, they are not looking
at reality. It is not only the very large dose, but also, the very low dose
that makes the poisons!!! We, living with MCS, are proof positive that it is the low
dose of poisons in products released to market without substantiation of safety that poisons us.
And if, our medical genuises would look at cancers, Parkinson's, Alzheimers, headaches, ADD,
ADHD, CFIDS, MCS, obesity, etc. as ENVIRONMENTAL ILLNESSES, then maybe they'd start
looking for the horrendous effects of suffered by the public as a result of the myriad of synthetic,
petrochemicall derived products released to market without substantiation of safety. -- barb

Agent Cues Embryo Shortfall - Herbicide weeds out mice in the womb, by J. Pickrell
"Safety tests for chemicals generally start with high exposures and sequentially test
different groups of animals with lower exposures until few or no toxicity effects are
visible. 'The dogma is, As the dose goes up, the effect gets worse,' says Fred vom Saal at
the University of Missouri in Columbia.
"However, vom Saal notes, an increasing body of research shows different patterns. Some
hormones, for example, cause the greatest effects at low and high doses, with little effect
at intermediate exposures. This dose-response pattern, known as a U-shaped curve,
has also been seen with hormonelike pollutants. [Here, folks, read in fragrances! - bw]
Toxicologists are currently at a loss to explain it, says vom Saal.
Porter's team speculates that their mouse results resemble the low end of a U-shaped curve.
They conjecture that small, but not large, concentrations of herbicides might interfere
with hormones that control embryo implantation.
OK, so how about all the people with reproductive problems who use petrochemically derived
scented products for personal care and their cleaning and maintenance chores? Why no studies for
the effects of low dose fragrance chemicals? Because if they found that these toxins did
adversely affect reproduction, they'd have to report it.
And then, what if the woman does become pregnant, but continue to use fragrances? What will
the coumarins, musks and the phthalates, which are commonly used in the manufacture of
synthetic scents, do to the developing fetus? Why do we in the USA have such a poor record when
it comes to reproductive problems, fetal development and low birth weight babies? What do we
really know of the role played by modern fragrances . . . and their twin, flavors? -- barb

DTC = Direct To Consumer advertising of drugs.
Frankly, I see DTC a windfall for the pharmaceutical industry, which ties in just all too nicely
with the proliferation of perfumed products. Perfumed products create a variety of illnesses . . .
the mainstream doctors tell you "It's all in your head!," but write a prescription for mind
altering drugs, along with drugs for your asthmatic symptoms or your headaches, or your vertigo,
etc. The people I know of who have been healthiest despite MCS are the ones who have not
relied on pharmaceuticals to get them over their adverse reactions. Medical doctors can diagnose
distinct diseases, which are caused by modern, petrochemical-derived fragrances. It's a vicious
circle and the only help for the already chemically injured is to avoid fragrances. But, synthetic
scents have been crafted to pollute extensive areas and linger long after the user is no longer
present; and when added to fabric softener products, they pollute neighborhoods while in use

Drugs are released to market after relatively little testing, and/or restricted testing. For example,
Viagra was not studied in patients who have a history of the following conditions:
- Heart attack, stroke, or life-threatening irregular heart rhythm within the last 6 months
- Very low and very high blood pressure
- Heart failure or unstable chest pain
- Certain eye disorders
- Because Viagra lowers blood pressure, your doctor will evaluate your overall medical condition to determine if Viagra, in
combination with sexual activity, could adversely affect you.
- Viagra can cause a rare but serious condition of prolonged erection (priapism). It is important to contact your health care provider immediately if your erection lasts longer than 4 hours.
- Men for whom sexual activity is inadvisable may not be good candidates for Viagra.
- Tell your doctor if you are taking protease inhibitors for the treatment of HIV.

When the drug hits the general population, the FDA begins to learn of adverse events. Adverse events means YOUR health is down the tubes and it also means premature death. An adverse event to the FDA is your health, your life. I hope your life and health mean something to you! Visit the FDA pages for information regarding drug recalls.
How many people living with the effects of MCS are actually the victims of IATROGENESIS?
Iatrogenesis is doctor-caused illness, disability, death. How many people have been prescribed drugs, who really should not have been? We learn in EPA reports (e.g., "Recognition and Management of Pesticide Poisonings") that mainstream medical doctors receive very little education in environmental health. These doctors are then given carte blanche in writing prescriptions, including mind-altering drugs. How many people have been told. "It's all in your head," and then given a prescription to help alter their illusions? Another concern is raised by people who have informed me that the mind-altering drugs that are touted as being non-habit forming, are actually quite addicting. I've also heard from people who have had serious adverse events due to
Another thought: If it can be understood that some people suffer negative health effects from
prescribed drugs (synthesized from chemicals), why is it so difficult to understand that some folks
have adverse reactions to fragrances (synthesized from chemicals)? Also, have you noticed the
similarity between the body's adverse reactions to prescribed drugs and the negative effects
we suffer due to synthetic fragrance formulations in personal care and household and janitorial
cleaning/maintenance products? Fragrance exposure symptoms at the primary, secondary or
tertiary levels of exposure can include, but are not limited to:
watery or dry eyes, double vision, sneezing, nasal congestion, sinusitis, tinnitus, ear
pain, dizziness, vertigo, coughing, bronchitis, difficulty breathing, difficulty swallowing,
laryngitis, asthma, anaphylaxis, headaches, seizures, fatigue, confusion, disorientation,
incoherence, short-term memory loss, inability to concentrate, nausea, lethargy,
anxiety, irritability, depression, mood swings, restlessness, rashes, hives, eczema, flushing,
muscle and joint pain, muscle weakness, irregular heart beat, hypertension,
swollen lymph glands, and more. (Candida Research and Information Foundation,
Perfume Survey, Winter 1989-90.) From Julia Kendall's Making Sense of Scents
http://users.lmi.net/~wilworks/ehnmsofs.htm#SYMPTOMS
Drug-caused adverse reactions, unlike fragrances, only affect the primary user. Use synthetic
scents and you are quite likely to be causing untold numbers of people adverse reactions.

AMERICAN ACADEMY OF PEDIATRICS - Committee on Drugs
" ... Some 773 chemical agents have been approved by the Food and Drug
Administration (FDA) for use as inactive ingredients in drug products.[2] Inasmuch as
these compounds are classified as "inactive," no regulatory statutes require listing on
product labeling. Pharmacopeial guidelines, enforceable under the Food, Drug, and
Cosmetic Act, do require labeling of inactive ingredients for topical, ophthalmic, and
parenteral preparations; orally administered products are currently exempt. Because of
pressure from professional and consumer organizations asking the FDA to require
complete disclosure of all ingredients, voluntary labeling was adopted by the two major
pharmaceutical industry trade associations. These voluntary guidelines contain an
exemption for "trade secret" components and do not require complete disclosure of all
fragrance and flavoring ingredients. Current problems encountered with "inactive"
ingredients include benzalkonium chloride-induced bronchospasm from antiasthmatic
drugs, aspartame-induced headache and seizures, saccharin-induced cross-sensitivity
reactions in children with sulfonamide allergy, benzyl alcohol toxicity in neonates
receiving high-dose continuous infusion with preserved medications, dye-related cross-
reactions in children with aspirin intolerance, lactose-induced diarrhea, and propylene
glycol-induced hyperosmolality and lactic acidosis. Although many other excipients
have been implicated in causing adverse reactions, these are the most significant in
the pediatric population .... "

THE PEDIATRIC GAP
Why have most medications never been properly tested on kids?
by JEROME GROOPMAN; Issue of 2005-01-10; Posted 2005-01-03
"Not long ago, a three-year-old boy fell off a jungle gym in Boston and lacerated his
cheek. His parents rushed him to the emergency room of a nearby hospital. A nurse
restrained the screaming boy while a surgeon cleaned his cheek and injected it with a
small dose of bupivacaine, a local anesthetic that is widely used in adults. When the
surgeon began to suture the wound, the child had a seizure and his blood pressure
suddenly dropped; he was on the verge of going into shock. He was transferred to the
intensive-care unit, where doctors tried to account for his symptoms. A CAT scan taken
to see if the fall had caused cerebral hemorrhage showed no evidence of brain damage.
"Maureen Strafford, a pediatric anesthesiologist and cardiologist, was paged to assist,
and she found that the level of bupivacaine in the boy's blood was perilously high. The
boy was intubated and placed on a respirator. He spent several days in intensive care
before recovering from the overdose. ... "
A friend called one evening besider herself with her then two-year old going crazy. He
was having one tantrum after another, and was not the sweet, even-tempered child he had
been, even earlier that day. I asked, Have you given him any drugs, OTC or prescription? Yes, he
had an earache and I took him to the doctor and he was given ... (I cannot remember the name
of the drug.) I suggested that she call the doctor immediately . . . turns out, her son did suffer
an "adverse event" to what was a commonly prescribed drug. A solution to infant and young
children's earaches could be so simple as removing all sources of scented products, including
at daycare facilities. -- barb

OVERSIGHT OF DRUG ADVERTISING NEEDED TO ENSURE
BALANCED, ACCURATE MESSAGES
By Michael Wilkes
"... [I]n 1985, the FDA allowed the pharmaceutical industry to advertise directly to
the public as long as they abided by existing standards for fair and balanced reporting
of benefits and risks. A new marketing approach was born and, with the huge
investment from pharmaceutical companies, advertising agencies went wild
creating effective promotions.
And, guess what folks, during the 1980s the fragrance industry went hog wild in its efforts
to make petrochemical derived fragrances ubiquitous. I see the fragrance industry and the drug
industry as being part and parcel of the chemical industry's not-so-merry-go-'round. It is
up to us to stop being dupes of the chemical industry. Purchase safer products, you just might
notice a change in your health. The easiest way to save money on drugs is not to have to use

Cindy Duehring
In loving memory of, and tribute to, Cindy Duehring who died the morning of June 29, 1999.
Cindy was poisoned by pesticides about 14 years ago. Despite severe toxic poisoning, and
resulting illnesses -- which I cannot even imagine living with -- she dedicated her life to
providing detailed and accurate information to help others who have been chemically injured.
Cindy will be truly missed, but her work will live on as an inspiration to us. -- barb
Cindy was buried in Bismarck, ND, on Saturday July 3, 1999. She requested that
donations (if any) be made to the MCS Research Fund, which CIIN intends to rename
the Cindy Duehring Memorial Research Fund.
