This Time
Last Year
Hrm. I'm going to skip the personal stuff for awhile, and tell you about my social life.
Yes, they *are* different things.
Anyhow, Sunday afternoon I went over to Mary Anne's for a brunch to meet Todd and Debby of mouth organ. Extremely nice people. In fact, after we were all fed (Mary Anne's brunches are always fabulous....never pass up an invite, she makes the yummiest, fanciest food), I totally forgot to be intimidated by their web "status" and found myself simply enjoying their company. In fact, most of the sex web gurus I met this weekend were very friendly and fun to be around. I can't remember when I've had so much fun turning strangers into friends so quickly!

That evening there was a cocktail party at Anne's (of Anne and Cathy, who edited the book that's the cause for all the hoopla: Women's Guide to Sex on the Web) home. There I met Jane (of Jane's Net Sex Guide and Heather Corrina (of Scarlet Letters) among others. I mention these two because I was so impressed by their vivacious personalities. They had just come from an erotic photo shoot, and were giggly and adorable, playing off each other like old friends. I was especially taken by Heather, the why of which will become obvious once I scan some photos in here.

David had refused to do the "Simpsons" with me that night (I hope he taped it), so I was completely at this party. I didn't have anything better to do, and the wine was tasty (I'm a new Chardonnay fan, which gives lesser headaches than the merlot) and I actually got over some of my recent shynesses and chatted! Again, I forgot to be all impressed with these people by the end of the party. The cream was that I was ready to go at the same time Mary Anne, Todd and Debby were, so no one was leaving too early or waiting around. Nice.

Last night was the book party for the above-mentioned book. David and I BARTed in together, and arrived on time (as David is wont to do). I wasn't very good at mingling on my own, even though there were people there who I'd met the night before. I was better once MA, Todd and Debby arrived, but I still cannot approach strangers like MA does. She's in her element, at a party. Todd and I commiserated a bit about our lack of mingling skills (even though I usually manage just fine, it's still not a comfortable situation), making me even *less* intimidated by him. Hell, by the time I hopped off the BART later that night, I was secretly hoping Todd and Debby would move out here, because they'd obviously make such excellent rl friends.

Hrm, well, Heather Corinna was wearing a hello kitty spaghetti strap tank over a fishnet top, with black ruffly panties, fishnets and knee-high patent leather boots. Yum. She's just the prettiest person, and she carries off adorable outfits so well! She claims to be shy (wish I were shy like that!), but she's outgoing, friendly and she smiles and laughs a LOT. The kind of person you want to be around because her aura is so warm and lovely.
Can you tell I'm a bit taken with her?

ANYhow, Mary Anne opened with some of the best off-the-cuff story telling I've ever seen her do. She's got great material, what with her family and all, and she was just very *on*. I think the mingling before hand really put her in her element. Andrea (who does the online version of Ask Isadora for the SF Bay Guardian) was charming in her honesty ("I'm a geek. I figured out long ago that I can't do cool..." A motto I'm thinking of adopting). Jane was nervous, sure, but she pulled it off anyway. She's a warm, friendly person, and her nervousness came across as charming, not embarrassing. Again, Heather claimed to be shy, which is a crock (although I did want her to talk a bit more). Todd impressed me by going up last and giving a professional, solid talk (the perfect anchor to the evening). There was socializing again after (David left early, which turned out to be ok), during which I nervously handed out my hand-cut business cards for CleanSheets (I had a pair of scissors and a sheet of cards on the BART ride there. Since I couldn't cut in a straight line, I tried to make them into pillows). I took BART back with MA and Todd and Debby, going the wrong way just so I could chat with them a little more.

Again, they're fine folk. They should move out here where they'll be appreciated in rl, too.

And that completes my rambling commentary on this weekend's events. I feel guilty, as I haven't typed in Kellie and Brian's wedding commentary yet; Brian wrote me such a nice letter about what I have so far -- I love this idea of his:

"I think that wedding should have official writers or journaler (?) or narrative voices. I sorta like the narrative voice idea. Anymore, this person would chronicle the events of the weekend (much like a photographer but without that damn annoying giggle and pace of ours!) and then hand off the record to the couple. With so many English majors out there wondering what to do with their degrees..."

And tonight, I garden.
