This Time
Last Year
There's a ringing in my ear
and ache along my
clenched jaw.

The phones I answer at work
tone loudly, off pitch
every time I transfer lines.

You'd think I'd learn, wouldn't you?
put the phone down when I know it's
gonna scream
wait those seconds I know so well
hear the long beep inside my head.

There's an soreness down my spine
flooding into a dull throb
in my hips.

The mat was thin
under us
but the drums were loud
beating in our ears, in our blood
in our bodies' rhythm.

It surprised you, didn't it?
phone rings muffled in the late night
hesitant tones,
those questions
(I know)
are hard to ask

but it's better once
you know for sure.
