Next But the office I'm working in is fairly mellow, for
corporate America. Lots of engineers. The work is slow, but the
expectation is that I stay busy. I have to admit I watch the clock. I
try not to check my yahoo email too many times. I breathe deeply and try
not to notice how they expect me to know things that I have not been
taught, how they expect me to log onto a secure system that has not issued
me a user id or a password. I just smile and do my best. Anyway, it
may be that I work there until the end of Janurary. It's not bad pay and
it's a free commute on BART. I'm certainly less stressed since I no
longer have to drive during rush hour. I can even make it to the gym on
BART after work in about the same amount of time that I did before
driving. It could be a lot worse.

The Temp

2000
It's lonely being a temp. I'd forgotten that look in people's eyes when
they meet you as a temp for the first time; it feels like they're seeing
an icon of what they think of when they hear the word "temp". That glassy
look doesn't communicate personal interest. It doesn't make me feel like
a real person. Exercise log:
Lifted weight Sunday: shoulders, sides, calves and abs and 25 minutes on
the precor machine. Lifted weights a bit last night: legs, then I did a
15 minute abs class followed by 20 minutes on a precor machine that was so
sticky I could hardly make it through . . .
