One Week in Maine: Day 6
|
We awoke to ospreys circling overhead. And mosquitos. Lots of mosquitos. It was nice to sleep with the "top down" (canopy not in place), but in retrospect it was a mistake.
We had spent the night in a large shallow bay near the town of Searsport (which we never really saw), among a flotilla of permanently moored boats. There was an oddly working-class, industrial feel to the area, underscored by some kind of facility that loudly worked through the night. We had heard earlier that Searsport had been the historical destination for logs coming down the river, so I'd guess that it was a logging town, or perhaps an ex-logging town. These tend to have a very down-to-earth feel, in my experience.

Yep, a right pretty sunrise. Would have been even better if there'd been some good reason to be awake at 5:00 in the morning!

A sailboat enjoying a broad reach out of Belfast, our starting and ending point. Meanwhile, we were "beating" (sailing into the wind) our way slowly into the harbor, zig-zagging under sail and eventually surrendering and using the motor. (Or maybe we used both simultaneously.)
The weather that morning was sunny and gorgeous as we meandered towards the end of our cruise. I stood on the bow, playing guitar as the other sailboats went by. This was when I realized that the chronic fog that plagued us for much of the trip was actually a godsend. If we had been exposed to a week of bright sunlight, the adventure would have been much less pleasant. At least for me.

"So, you decided to come home, eh?" Well, that's not the way it really happened. In fact, Deb was in Maine, at a conference, while Fred and I were out dallying about. Hence the timing of our trip: Six day conference at Colby College in Waterville, six day cruise around Penobscot Bay. At the conclusion of each, Deb picked us up and we drove for about six hours back to Vermont.

Which left us back at home, just in time for...

Sailing the warm waters of Lake Champlain! No rest for the wicked.
