20th Maine Volunteer Infantry

"The Lions of Round Top"

Painting by Don Troiani (http://www.historicalartprints.com)

used with artist's permission

Historical note: Mr. Troiani's painting depicts a sense of chaos, rather than order to the charge down Little Round Top at the battle of Gettysburg.  This coincides with the recent research published by Tom Desjardin.  Also note that Melcher is in the forefront of the spontaneous charge.  Most notably, the national colors are correct for the period.  The 20th Maine was issued only one flag after forming and marching to Washington.  It was a generic Philadelphia depot flag with the concentric oval star pattern.  They left the state of Maine with no flag, which may explain why their regimental name was not added on the 4th red stripe with gold leaf paint.
