All Our Voices: Celebrating Diversity through Storytelling.

A unique multi-cultural festival featuring storytelling performances, informative and interactive workshops, and community story swapping. Explore the richness of our diverse voices while hearing Jewish, Latino, Asian, African American and Native American stories come to life. Develop the skills to tell your own stories, learn new storytelling techniques or delve into stories that reflect the wealth of cultural life that surrounds us.

Don't miss this opportunity to experience the stories that shape our multi-cultural society, enrich our community, and bring us together to learn from each other and to share the joy of storytelling.

Ascension: A Photography Opening with Shoey Sindel

Shoey Sindel’s, evocative photography exhibit Ascension, vividly captures the abstractions of staircases, allowing the viewer to see stairways from a different perspective – one that transcends to another worldly, spiritual place

Shoey Sindel is a local photographer specializing in fine art and portraiture. She has shown in art shows at UC Berkeley, Nexus Gallery, Grant Street Gallery and Laney College. She is married and is the mother of two boys who attend the JCC. Light refreshments

KlezCalifornia’s fabulous celebration of Eastern European Jewish Culture kicks off with a concert and dance party featuring the renowned band, Veretski Pass, other local klezmer bands and Chicago-based dance teacher Steve Weintraub. Experience the joy, depth and power of Klezmer music as you dance the night away.

A full “Day in Yiddishland" with participatory workshops in:

—Klezmer music for all levels (bring instruments!),
—Yiddish literature, language, popular phrases, and humor
—Eastern European Jewish history
—Sing-alongs and dancing
—Special teen workshops
—Youth program for ages 5 and up

Hollywood Hats

An entertaining and fun filled event about classic Hollywood, the great stars and their hats. Don’t miss this one woman show performed by Gloria Heidi, once a protege of the legendary Hollywood designer Edith Head. She combines tinseltown lore, insider stories, songs and more - taking the audience on a rollicking trip to the sound stages, the costume closet and the dressing rooms of Movietown's leading ladies. Writers of the Storm:
Fake News, and Public Decency, in the Age of Terror"

A Writers-at-Large Panel Discussion featuring Bay Area artist, and president of The First Amendment Project, moderator, Clinton Fein, and panelists Floyd Salas, author, and president of PEN Oakland, playwright Scott McMorrow, journalist and author, David Ewing Duncan, journalist, author, and speech writer for Mario Cuomo, Jeff Gillenkirk, novelist, and social commentator, Stephen Elliott, and radio journalist, Noelle Hanrahan.

Don’t miss this informative and timely panel discussion exploring the writer’s role in relationship to what the concept of decency means, who gets to decide that, and whether that decision diminishes the power of pen, the dignity of writers, as well as the importance of diversity of opinion.

Writers of the Storm is presented in collaboration with Writers-at-Large, a California-based writers’ advocacy group which operates under a small grant from the California Arts Council. Co-sponsored with American Booksellers Foundation for Free Expression, in New York, and City Lights Book Store.
