Interdepartmental Meeting 11/00

Here is a report from Mike Mannix on Dimond issues discussed at the Interdepartmental Working Group meeting of November first. The Interdepartmental Working Group is convened several times a year by Councilmember Dick Spees. Representatives from a number of City agencies meet to report on their response to problems in the Dimond/Laurel neighborhood.

  1. Goodwill is still interested in the Sprouse-Reitz building, but they have not signed a lease yet. They want a loading zone in front of the building for use in the morning. They want to have an outlet store there, with no drop-off of donations. We understand that any second-hand goods store requires a special permit with a public hearing; perhaps special conditions could be imposed like those that have been imposed on the Goodwill store on Broadway.

  2. The new parking lot on Sloan will be changed from 2 hour to 4 hour parking. There is also the possibility that it will be turned into a lot that can be used by commuters, so that it will not be as underused as it is now.

  3. The new play area was dedicated on November 4th. Future improvements in the park include seating around some of the trees and work on the wall around the pool. These improvements should be started in about two months. Still in the planning stage is a new deck and pavement for the patio of the recreation center.

  4. Safeway would like to meet with some neighbors; call Niccolo if you want to join in. The meeting would probably be during the day, downtown.

  5. Bus stops will be installed on Lincoln Avenue where the new stop signs are. A.C. Transit does the work; they haven't specified a time frame.

  6. The meeting with A.C. Transit concerning the recent move of the 53 bus stop at Fruitvale and MacArthur has been postponed from its scheduled time in December. We aren't yet certain when it will occur.

  7. New police dispatchers are being trained to fill vacancies in the dispatch office and reduce response time.

  8. The triangle at MacArthur and Champion is full of cars again. Would a fence be appropriate? Would a fence just move the cars and boats out onto the sidewalk or over to the paved area between the fire station and the driving school?

  9. Traffic Engineering sent a letter to Parking Enforcement requesting enforcement of parking regulations at 2000 MacArthur.
