Tuesday, April 29th, 2003 - Let's all do the Bitches Dance!

So much good news in the ShawPratt household, and only a bit of it can I crow about here.

So, those of you who read Tim's journal have already heard, but I'll say it again. Our holiday chapbook, Floodwater got reviewed in the June issue of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction by Charles deLint! This is a HUGE deal, quite an honor, and it's a good review to boot! I'm pretty sure it hasn't hit the newsstands yet, but we're wondering if the remaining 55 copies might sell out as a result of the review? Probably not, but if you want to be sure of getting a copy, I'd order soon ;-)

Hee!

So, I got some *very* good news tonight, but they made me promise not to announce it publically/ online for another two weeks! Meep! But, let's just say that I did the happy dance, the "you're all my bitches" dance, the "I rule!" dance. Yay!

Ahem.

So, as I mention in my sidebar, I'm joining Mr. vanEekhout in his May Young Adult Novel Writing Dare (capitalized to show how serious I am about this, yo). I've got a really good (IMHO) story idea for it, and I've started the barest outline -- enough to get me through the first two chapters, at least. It draws heavily on my childhood without actually being about me, which is a good thing, I think. And it's slightly subversive without being unsellable, which is definitely a good thing! So, yay! 60,000 words, here I come!

Of course, Greg has already gone and Cheated, but we'll not let that bother us too much :-)

We're buying a car. We've got our eyes on a used 1992 Toyota Corolla DX that has a minor transmission problem, but is only $1100. I'm going to call my garage and see if they can look at it on Saturday, and if it checks out (and has a smog certificate -- v. important out here to make sure of that when buying a used car, I'm told) then I guess we just write them a check? Any advice would be appreciated; I hate to admit that both Tim and I have had our previous cars given to us by family, and have never done this sort of thing before.

Am in such a good mood today! Man!

Oh, hey, just in case I don't post a journal entry on Thusday, let me just point you all to my article (from 2001, but still) on Beltane. A bit of trivia: the first time Tim flirted with me was when he sent me an email (we'd been emailing, but not flirting overtly, before this) offering to help me "research" various aspects of Beltane for this article. Hee! I still remember reading that and getting that fluttery "he likes me *that* way!" feeling.

Speaking of Tim and myself, yesterday was our two year anniversary. I tried (and failed) to write a poem about our future together on my way home yesterday as a gift for him. When I got home, he presented *me* with a chapbook called "Bridge" that was all about us and our future daughter and her supernatural abilities. Very sweet and touching and it made me cry. He's so good to me.

I thought it was especially fitting that we got our contributor's copy of F&SF with our review in it (see above) yesterday; "The Heart, a Chambered Nautilus" was last year's gift, and it gets a rave review by deLint.

I gave my gift to Tim on Saturday, which was dinner at Bay Wolf (v. expensive and v. v. yummy) and a hot tub afterwards (which I reserved but he paid for; dinner was 4 times what the hot tub costs, though, so it still counts as a gift :-). We were both wonderfully relaxed afterwards and once again wondered why we don't do that more often.

Ok, I think I've rambled on long enough. Hope you're all doing as well as I am!

Be my bitch.

Exercise Log:

Walking around Stanford with Tim and Dave Kirtley on Saturday. Did an hour yoga class Sunday. Half an hour of abs and back last night. Am beginning to feel different (better) and have muscle tone returning to arms. Go me!

Writing log:

After last week's consistent writing during the morning commute, have decided/ been badgered into joining Greg's YA novel writing dare (inspired by Greg, but badgered by Tim). Have begun outlining and am very excited about the book. Would like to complete the house story and maybe revise "Skatebirding" and send it out before I do this, but perhaps I'll have to settle for during. Hee. Oh, and I did an edit on my Oakland collab with Tim, who did a final edit and sent it to Mike for his Intracities anthology. For more writing news, see the body of this entry.

Current Publications:

"Famishing" in Strange Horizons. My first pro sale!

"Wetting the Bed" and a collab with Tim Pratt, "A Serious Case of Fairies" in Floodwater

"How to Suck" reprinted in From Porn to Poetry: Clean Sheets Celebrates the Erotic Mind

Currently Reading:

Singularity Sky by Charles Stross
(A treat they gave out at the Nebulas!)

Polyphony 2 ed. by Deborah Layne and Jay Lake
(A treat waiting for me in the mail when I got home!)

Donate money to my teeth, my grad school application fees, our writerly projects (Floodwater and Flytrap!). Every little bit helps!
