Saturday, August 24th 2002 - Fat-free FoodstuffOh, lordy! I guess it's past time for a journal entry, hm?The big "news" is that I'm on a diet. This diet is only about 2 days old, and I suppose you could say I'm doing "well", but damn this sucks! Always before when I wanted to lose weight, I'd pick up an exercise regime (lifting weights, doing the precor, etc) and lose slowly -- 2 pounds a month -- which I'd ASSUMED meant that it would stay off better than if I'd lost it more quickly. Enter Tim Pratt. Now, before you all go accusing me of blaming my boyfriend for something I should have my own control over, let it be known that Tim FREELY ADMITS that "for some reason all the women I date tend to put on weight". And, I've *tried* to keep my own eating habits from before we were dating (or, rather, return to them), but it's really, really difficult when your boyfriend joyously suggests ice cream every other day and a midnight trip to the Smokehouse every third night. Even if I don't take him up on it every time, I'm eating french fries and ice cream more often that I should be. At least, I was. Now I'm on this horrible, awful, wretched FOOD diet, and I'm STARVING! I now understand all these women on diets who think exercise is this curse from Satan and can never make themselves do it. I understand now because you know what? When you're always hungry you just don't have enough energy to sit up straight, let alone go swim for a half an hour. Ok, ok, so I'm still getting used to this diet, letting my stomach shrink down and learning how to get more food for less calories, but I still think there's a problem here. I don't want to have to cut back on exercising because I don't have the energy because I'm dieting. There's a serious flaw in that. Anyway. We'll see how long this food dieting works. Maybe if I can just drop enough pounds and get used to eating healthier then I'll be able to pick up some of my old favorite exercises again (which I'm just too heavy to do now, I'm sorry to admit) and lose weight from exercise and eat a maintaining diet instead of this (feels like) starvation diet. Lots of other stuff has been going on. Hanging out with Susan and Jen has been very fun. More girl time than I'm used to, and I'm loving it. I mean, there was no way I was gonna get Tim to see Blue Crush with me, but with those two it was a very joyous girl's day out. Tim and I also met them for the recent Wil Wheaton vs. Barney the dinosaur grudge match at the DNA lounge the other night. Much fun! I'm getting old though -- I had to get a pair of earplugs to deal with the music and I couldn't dance nearly as much as I used to. I hate getting old, but there it is. Not a party girl any more (not sure I ever was, but anyway . . . ) Oh! I'm doing two (that's right, two) readings at the SFF.net suite at WorldCon next Friday. I'm reading at 4:30 and again at 9pm (that last one is sf erotica, so adults only! whoo!). The tricky part is finding some of my sf that doesn't have sex in it for the first reading. I'm not sure I write PG material. I might find something PG13, I suppose . . . Lots of other good folks reading that Friday, too: Greg reads at 1:00, Tim at 2:00, Ling at 4:00, me at 4:30 and Mike at 5:00. Fun! Well, I hate to write and run, but it's time to go burn my precious few calories in the pool at the Y. Swimming might not have dropped the pounds, but after the first 2 weeks I could see *nice* muscle definition in my arms. Swimming rules. |
