Next We read some of
our beginnings out loud to the class, and I was relieved to hear that most
of the class are thoughtful, intelligent writers with a good dollop of
talent. It actually makes me hate my own story even more - the thing I'm
working on has the potential to be very, very cheesy. So far it's ok -
Molly (a classmate) compared it to the Harry Potter books, which is quite
a compliment (and a shock, as I wasn't writing young adult books and if
this IS young adult there goes that hot sex scene I was planning for near
the end of the story . . . perhaps I'll try both a PG and an R rated
ending?). Anyhow, I'm not really wanting to write anything as gentle as a
Harry Potter book right now - this story will have much more bitterness in
it than Molly could see from the beginning - I'll have to foreshadow that
more. But her comments did give me a new direction to go in - I'm
developing a character whom I originally thought was just a walk-on. The
really interesting thing for me is that the character who reflects my
personality in this piece is a 12-year-old girl - or me at around age
12. Hmm, actually, this character is somewhat nicer than I was at age 12,
which is rather telling about me, since the girl in the story is rather
devious. Sorry - I'm all "story-story-story" today (much like I get when
I have a crush on someone and I'm all "boy-boy-boy"). I was talking with
Christa at lunch about her kitties (the story has lots of cats in it and
one of the main characters speech patterns are based on the way Christa
talks about her cats) and something in what she said totally gave me the
ending for my story! I was so psyched, but I can't write until I get home
(phones too distracting for one thing)! But I know where it's going now -
I can finish this baby tonight!! Then, then I've got ANOTHER piece which
is probably going to be heavily based on Holly and my relationship in the
mountains of Spain (which I haven't put up here yet, I know). That's
going to be a more serious piece than the current, goofy cat-story (which,
after editing, I hope will be in the style of Tom Robbins. That's one
reason why I keep writing it, despite the fact that I'm afraid it will get
cheesy - this writing style is not my typical writing style, and I think
it's good for me to practice something else. Yeah, that's it.). Anyhow,
I'm about a story and a half behind my head right now, and I'm dying to
catch up.
Wrote the second beginning for my assignment at lunch (it'll probably be
another story with the same characters, since it's set 20 years
earlier). After class I was so pumped up from Molly's (a
classmate) comments on my story that I sat down and just
let more of my story flow out of me - 1388 words
worth before I was too tired to see straight. Writing
class = double plus good. Do Androids Dream of Electric
Sheep? (aka "Blade Runner") by Phillip K. Dick

Friday, June 23rd -
Story-story-story!
Part of me really loves my writing class. Then there's the parts of me
that don't like it at all. We sit still for 2 hours before we get the
briefest of breaks (not even enough time to potty, buy a drink and do some
yoga to stretch out the kink in my legs). It is physically terribly
painful for me, and I think I shoot the teacher irritated looks because he
always looks back at me with a bewildered expression. Exercise log:
Lifted weights: back and bicep day. And let me tell you, it's HELL to sit
still for 3 hours in tiny schoolroom desk after working out; I stood up
and almost fell down, my muscles were so fatigued. Rrgh.
