Thursday, March 6th, 2003 - Tangental Tea

And, in my excitement last night I forgot the main reason I wanted to post an entry yesterday! A review of Famishing is up and free to the public over at Tangent Online. It's my first review, and it's pretty damn good! Go, read and agree or disagree and post your comments below! Or not. You all are so good to me, I shouldn't ask for more . . .

The complaints she has in the review I can't disagree with too much. I need to take a grammar refresher course, I've been thinking that for awhile now. And as far as having the characters speak for themselves more, well, I think this latest story has a lot of that (at least, it's got lots of dialogue, heh; I was on a roll yesterday as far as having imaginary conversations was concerned ... were concerned? See what I mean about the grammar?).

But, overall, she gets it. I'm very glad to have gotten a female reviewer, as most women get the story right off. Many men do, too, but I've found that even very liberal, sensitive men can miss the point of the story. Or not get it. But, actually, that's probably not fair, as almost every male response has been as positive as the women's, so just ignore me.

I'd complain about being labled "horror" or the repeated assertion that my protagonist is sympathetic but not likable, but I am beginning to accept that people say those things about my stories, and I'll just have to live with it. Just for the record, I love my characters (ok, like them at the very least) and I consider my work more "dark fantasy" than "horror" but I'll live with the labels.

By the way, anyone who wants to read/ critique "Skatebirding" when it's ready for first readers should email me at: gryffyn[at]there.net. Tim swears it's not speculative, even if it is set in the near future. I think it's just speculative enough for Strange Horizons or LCRW, but probably not for Asimov's, Realms, etc. Opinions on that from first readers are very welcome as well. Anyway, I want to edit/ layer it a bit more before it goes out to first readers, so it might be a little while.

I keep thinking I'm forgetting something else, which makes me reluctant to post this . . . . oh well.

Review me, baby!
