This
is the engine of a Togolise taxi. The plastic yellow
container is the fuel tank. There are some taxis not
quite this worked over but this is not an uncommon arrangement.
It is very difficult to find parts in Togo so the drivers
and mechanics are extremely resourceful to keep
their cabs on the road. I wish we could be so in the
US.
View from the back seat of this cab that we hired to
take us all the way to the north. Between
the cost of fuel for his trip home and the money he
had to pay the owner of the cab, this driver may have
made $7.00 commission in the four days of service with
us. Fidel's mother fed him and he slept in the cab for
the four days. Fuel in Togo costs just as much as it
does here in the states.
