Monday, February 10th, 2003 - Famishing

So, today I have a story up at Strange Horizons. It's called "Famishing" and it's my first pro sale, and it's one of my favorites, so you should all hurry over there and give it a read. Pretty please? If you like it, there's a little "reader's comments" link down at the bottom, where I encourage you to go and make your opinion heard :-)

You should really go read the story now, as the following is a small spoiler and is intended as a treat for after you've read "Famishing"

I'm very excited about this, of course. I know I owe you all a great long journal entry, but in the meantime I'm going to leave you with this little picture. This is the photo that inspired the first flashback in the story, and I thought you might find it interesting in that respect. I used descriptions of actual photos for most of the story, but the real story behind them isn't usually the same as the one in the narrative. This one is, though, more or less. The routine was called "Ain't She Sweet" and, as you can see here, the costumes were blue instead of pink, but I really was put in the older girls class because I was too tall for girls my own age (I also thought I was fat at the time, but now can't see how that could be). My mom is also cooler than the mom in the story.

I do want to make the disclaimer that this story, no matter what its inspiration, is fiction. I would never abuse cream like that.

"Famishing".

Where does your inspiration come from?
