Thursday, February 13th, 2003 - Sweet, sweet Nebulae

What a giddy week! As most of you have heard, Tim had his story Little Gods added to the Nebula Final Ballot by the Nebula jury this year. This happened on Monday, the same day my story went up over at Strange Horizons. He had already left for work and I had just checked email and saw a note from Vera Nazarian congratulating him when he walked back into the house to grab a book he'd forgotten. I ran out of the bedroom (yes, nekkid like Tim's report says) and was all eloquent: "baby baby! You made the ballot!" as I pulled him into my bedroom to read the email. His knees went literally weak and he collapsed into my laundry pile. He was so cute. I was so excited. It was so, so cool.

I'd been joking the day before that he'd get the nomination and hog the spotlight the day my story went up, but actually it seems to have the opposite effect: I think I've gotten a bit more attention because of my connection with Tim and his good news than I would've on any old day. Maybe. I dunno. There are now 6 comments about Famishing over on the Strange Horizons Forum; people seem to have fairly strong reactions to the story, which pleases me. Ok, so I admit the first negative comment bummed me out, but by Tuesday I'd realized that it's pretty cool that the story spurred them to post a comment, even if their reaction was rather negative. And, no, I don't write "pretty" stories, at least not as far as happy endings are concerned, but I'm ok with that. Still, I have to admit that it's the postive comments that I read over and over again. Of course :-)

Speaking of positive comments, I hear there's a rather positive review of "Famishing" over at Tangent Online but you have to be a subscriber to read it right now (though I hear it's only about $5 to subscribe). It'll be available for free in a few weeks, and I'll link it directly then.

And, finally, I found out last night that "Famishing" already has TWO recommendations for next year's Nebula! One of those is even from someone I'm not sleeping with! (For those of you who don't know, 10 recommendations from SFWA (Science Fiction Writer's Association) members gets it on the preliminary ballot, then the members vote on that and the top 5 make it onto the final ballot (or the Nebula jury can find you so deserving that they place you on it directly, which is what happened to Tim -- see above). Anyway, not holding my breath, but I'm just thrilled -- THRILLED -- that my story is getting such wonderful attention.

Well, this journal is all about fiction and such, and it's long enough now that I think it should be posted as is. It's been a giddy week, as I've said, and Tim and I are both feeling groovy. I'l try to post something a bit more personal soon, but it's really hard to concentrate on something other than the big events this week, sorry.

Say . . . is this a movement?
