Monday, January 28th, 2002 - Sapphire Snow Cones

So, once again I have a new review up at work. The comic Sapphire, (vol. 1) isn't nearly so dirty as my Animal Trainer 5 review, so I'll go ahead and link it for you. Not sure whether you should go read it at work; I suppose if your boss doesn't track your surfing and no one is behind you when you read the page, you'll be ok. All of our new stuff can be found here by the way.

Have I mentioned lately how much I love my job?

So, let's talk about the weather. Right now, it's colder here than it is in Chicago. Chicago, with its lake-effect and everything. It's been snowing; it snowed out here last year, too, not where I live, but up in the hills. This year they closed the schools in Petaluma over an inch or two of snow. There's a frost warning.

It makes me giggle, but, really, when you think about it, it honestly does make sense. We're not equipped for snow out here; it doesn't snow every year, and when it does, it's only for a day or so. A fluke. Many drivers have never driven on snow and the road crews don't have ploughs. It makes it dangerous to be on the roads.

The frost warnings are serious, too. I mean, it's not too early out here to start your spring seedlings. My bulbs have been up for weeks. A serious frost could kill off all of this. Hell, even in the Midwest we got frost warnings when they were unseasonable; you have to know to go out and cover the plants, so they don't die off in the freezing weather. So, as much as it makes those of us who grew up in the snow shake our heads and tell stories of being snowed in for days, it's not as silly as it sounds.

The house is looking so cozy! Karen and Par gave us their bookcases and dining room table, and now it looks like actual adults live here. The dining room table is a drop-leaf, and we have it up against the windows, with one leaf up, the other down, with plants by the windows and pretty candles in the middle of the table. It reminds me a bit of my dining room in Franklin with Kellie; I think I had more plants there, but then again, I didn't have the garden I do in California.

Writing log:

I forgot to mention that "Goat Girl" got a very nice rejection from Strange Horizons: "Thank you for submitting "Goat Girl" to Strange Horizons. Unfortunately, we will not be able to accept it. I found the story truly charming and look forward to reading more of your work." I mean, sure, I'd rather it were a very nice acceptance, but if they have to turn me down, I'm pleased to be so encouraged.
