Monday, May 22nd - Ducks in a Row

Exercise log:

Mowed the lawn on Saturday

Gardened for several hours in 90 degree heat on Sunday, pulling weeds and whatnot; if that's not exercise, I don't know what is!

Did 100 sit-ups (50 upper abs, 50 lower abs) and lifted some handweights to tone up the arms for my tank tops.

Walked over to David's place for dinner on Sunday (1.3 miles, last part up a steep staircase/hill).

My room is fairly clean. I have a new duvet cover - cream with flowers in dark blue, green and maroon, which match the darker plaid pillows that complement my winter bedroom wardrobe. The narrow walkways aren't as narrow as they used to be - I got some piles of books, periodicals and random papers cleared away. I have a new green and blue plaid throw rug (good for doing sit-ups on) and a nifty wooden/canvas laundry hamper that folds up, even with clothes in it. These are all little things, but they make my room look so much neater, more put together and less messy. Next up: Real curtains!

The yard also got a haircut this weekend. The knee-high grasses in the lawn portion were hacked down by yours truly. David and I pulled weeds along the garden beds, and I uncovered the rock border on the raised flower bed. I took the row covers off the tomatoes and pinched them back (so they don't get out of control like they did last year). We're up to 4 boughten tomato plants and at least 3 volunteer tomatoes (maybe 4). I wove the honeysuckle back so you can get through the front gate without it wacking you in the face. The sweetpeas are now towering 2 feet over the top of our trellis. The yard smells heavenly. The whole yard looks very smart; having the grass lower really brings out all the pretty flowers and neat rows of plants.

I keep wandering around the house, rocking back on my heels and admiring the neatness which has so recently invaded. There are still some major things to be done, but I don't feel as scattered. I spoke to Renee, (a friend of Aron and Jen's who is staying with us while she house-hunts in this area) about personal finances, and not only do I feel like I'm not as bad off as I thought (I've already got a 401K, which is a good idea to do when you're young) but I feel like I've got something of a financial plan for the future. She's very enthusiastic (she's been working as an editor on personal finance books in New York) and knowledgeable, and is totally willing to answer any stupid questions and make me see the light. I think I finally even understand my stock options (I think). Not that I'm usually in the mind to discuss finances when it's that hot outside, but it was a nice little addition to all the organizing/cleaning that was done this weekend.

I don't mean for this to be such a log of what I did - I'm just not coming up with specific topics for discussion at the moment. I need to go organize a couple of other things now, so if you'll excuse me, I'll chat with y'all later!

Finished today:
Confidence of the Heart by David Schweidel, who is teaching my Intermediate Fiction Writing course this summer.
