"The Last Vampire" by Diane E., 1995
(This author died in 2012.)
- Short Story (4,415 words)
- PG-13
- Diverges from canon in second season
Summary:
Nick goes public with his vampirism.
Recommendation:
Famous for her comedy, Diane here crafts a fascinating drama with a unique twist on a rare angle. This Nick reveals his vampirism publicly, under the pretense that he is the last of his kind. This change naturally resonates through the lives of everyone who knows him, but this story's insight registers in the effects on those who don't know him — except through his sudden celebrity. "The Last Vampire" besieges Nick with the grudges, delusions and fantasies of strangers, sapping his strengths and battering his weaknesses until Lacroix makes him an offer he can't accept.
Characters:
Nick, Enforcers, Lacroix, Schanke, Cohen, Others
"Lost and Found" by Susan G., 1999
(This author died in 2010.)
- Short Story (4,571 words)
- PG
- Post-series, diverging from canon near "Last Knight"
Summary:
Nick and Natalie's son, who ran away, comes home to speak with Nick.
Recommendation:
"Lost and Found" is rich in regret and hope, those most characteristic flavors of FK. This alternate future dives into Nick as a father and touches on Nick as a husband, while sprouting a wrenching new tragedy from the roots of his original vampiric sin. Never leaving the confines of a front porch on a summer evening, the story beautifully, wretchedly pours salt in the "you can't go home again" wounds festering on the hearts of Nick, Natalie, Janette and Lacroix, as well as Nick and Natalie's son. (Written for the charity fanzine A Taste of Forever, this is one of few stories by Susan never posted to fkfic-l.)
Characters:
Nick, Lacroix, Others
"Full of Grace" by LastScorpion, 2011
- Short Story (7,499 words)
- PG
- Parallels canon until diverging during "Last Knight"
Summary:
Grace's letters to her mother reveal how she sees canon events, up through her last-minute intervention to save Natalie.
Recommendation:
This epistolary tale sweeps across all three seasons before exploding the finale. It builds a richly rounded life for Grace while exposing key canon events from her side (emphasizing that, like Stonetree and Schanke, she's not in on Nick's quest). "Full of Grace" shapes an arc for Grace's relationship with Natalie from early misapprehensions, through holding at arm's length, to adopting Natalie's peril as her responsibility. Invoking FK's multiple canonical psychics and shamans, this story makes Grace a Gullah herb doctor, a clever twist that both dramatizes lost opportunities and enables a stunning climax.
Characters:
Grace, Stonetree, Schanke, Natalie, Nick, Tracy, Lacroix
