How WW I brought Jazz and Blues to Europe through Americaıs involvement
in the war.
LITERACY:
Students will be asked to write about a current event in which they
have a strong opinion.

OBJECTIVE:
Surveying the music of Britain during WW I. Listening examples will
accompany.
TOPIC:
Ralph Vaughn Williams: One of Britain most distinguished composers
who also served in the war.
LITERACY:
Students
will begin to reword their previous days writing assignment so that
it begins to take the form of a song or rap.

OBJECTIVE:
Surveying the music of Germany during WW I. Listening examples will
accompany.
TOPIC:
Paul Hindemith and how the war affected his music during his wartime
service in Germany.
LITERACY:
Students
will continue working on their songs/raps.

OBJECTIVE:
Looking at what else was going on musically in other European countries.
Listening examples will accompany. Students will receive a primer
on basic music theory learning about scales and the families of
musical instruments.
TOPIC:
The music of and Igor Stravinsky, Sergei Prokofiev (Russia), Bela
Bartok (Hungary), Manuel de Falla (Spain). Listening to samples
of their wartime compositions.
LITERACY:
Students
will finalize their songs/raps. They will then write a letter to
the favorite musical artist summarizing what theyıve learned in
music appreciation. They will then ask them to consider looking
over their song in hopes of using it on their next album.

OBJECTIVE:
Students will continue in their primer on the most basic elements
of music theory (note names and note values etc.).
TOPIC:
Discussion
of ways in which music has been utilized in major world, national
and local events. How is music as a means of protesting or promoting
patriotism.
LITERACY:
Students
will select a composition they heard during the week and will write
about how the music makes them feel. We will use the computers in
the lab, which have CD players and head phones.
