TOPIC:
Nerve Damage

OBJECTIVE:
SWBAT describe how several different diseases (ALS, MS, neurofibro-mitosis) affect the nervous system.

SWBAT explain how chemical warfare agents (nerve gases) used in WWI can damage the nervous system and kill people.

LITERACY:
- Scientific reading and writing literacy skills will be emphasized through reading apprenticeship program.

- Oral literacy skills will also be addressed as students will be assessed on a verbal explanation of how chemical weapons destroy normal nervous system functioning.

TOPIC:
Brain Injuries

OBJECTIVE:

TOPIC:
Quiz Day

OBJECTIVE:
SWBAT answer 75% of quiz questions correctly. Quiz questions will be drawn exclusively from class assignments, readings, discussions, and activities. In addition, it should be noted that quiz will be constructed to enable various different student learning style strengths to emerge (symbolic, visual, and kinesthetic)

LITERACY:
-Scientific reading and writing literacy skills will be emphasized as part of the quiz.

-Visual/artistic literacy skills will be emphasized as part of the quiz.

- Kinesthetic literacy skills will be emphasized as part of the quiz.

TOPIC:
Stem Cells: Group Project Introduction

OBJECTIVE:
-SWBAT articulate (both orally and in writing) the main requirements of their upcoming group project:
Topic: the appropriateness of funding stem cell research: should we do it?

-Issues: Cost (and whošs paying for it), scientific efficacy abd morality

- Form: PowerPoint presentation to be given before the class and community

LITERACY:
-Oral literacy skills will be emphasized today as students strive to refine their understanding of the parameters of the group project by asking questions.

- Scientific reading and writing literacy skills will be emphasized through reading apprenticeship program, as students read through some stem cell articles.

TOPIC:
Project Stem Cell Research and Opinions

OBJECTIVE:
SWBAT (in groups) list 3 pros & 3 cons for each issue related to funding stem cell research (cost, efficacy & morality).

SWBAT to also arrive at a consensus about the groupšs opinion.

LITERACY:
-Scientific reading and writing literacy skills will be emphasized through reading apprenticeship program, as students research stem cell articles.

-Oral literacy skills will be emphasized as students strive to voice their opinions in a constructive manner.
